The Institute

The Daedalos Institute of Geopolitics is a not-for-profit organization, founded in May 2006 by the Council of Ministers of Cyprus as an independent scientific body managed by a Board of Directors. Its main charter is to promote study and to spread information on geopolitical issues linking peoples, nations and countries.

Geopolitics describes the idea which citizens have of their own locality, country and region. It maps out the political reasoning behind the territorial issues which divide national, regional and local actors. It reconstitutes the debates within the political class and civil society concerning the future of the nation, the region and the local community.

Geopolitics is a combination of different disciplines. It combines:

- the discipline of the historian who weighs up the importance of collective memory in contemporary ideas;

- the discipline of specialists in certain parts of the world who study and interpret their area of interest in terms of its language and culture;

- the disciplines of jurists, economists and strategists who make analyses in terms of intelligence and the balance of power.

Geopolitics is not only a science but also a form of action, which explains why it is closely connected to kindred activities such as journalism, consulting, forecasting and risk analysis.

The Daedalos Institute of Geopolitics is not interested in received opinions or in the lowest common denominator of consensus. The Institute has no political bias or ideology and it excludes no political point of view or argument. It is for the public to decide which opinion is the most convincing.

Daedalos does not see itself as a purely academic institution. It will certainly call on academics but also on journalists, military men and above all decision-makers in national, international, regional and local affairs. Daedalos is original precisely because it encourages an encounter between “specialists” and decision-makers on the ground.

Daedalos’ activities and publications are directed to students, journalists, lawyers, politicians and to all concerned citizens. Its aim is to help decision-makers by enriching their knowledge and by having some influence on their choices.
